TREATING SURVIVORS OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION OR CUTTING: A CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND TRAUMA-INFORMED APPROACHIn 2012, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that over half a million women and girls had undergone or were at risk for undergoing female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C) procedures in the United States. That number was projected to rise in the decades ahead. Despite this alarming trend, many mental health providers are not familiar with FGM/C procedures or their outcomes. This training will provide a firm knowledge base around what FGM/C procedures entail, and will address the physical, psychological, and psychosocial consequences of those procedures. We will also explore cultural perspectives on FGM/C, and will discuss culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches to treating clients who have undergone FGM/C procedures.
Participants in this 3-hour training will learn the following:
• The definition of FGM/C
• The four categories of FGM/C procedures
• The origins of FGM/C practices
• Cultural perspectives on and beliefs around FGM/C
• Dispelling myths about FGM/C
• The psychological and psychosocial consequences of FGM/C
• Culturally responsive approaches for treating clients who have undergone FGM/C
• Trauma-informed approaches for treating clients who have undergone FGM/C
